Family Ties [Part 29] (For real this time)
Title: Family Ties
Characters (in this chapter): South Korea, Japan, Canada, America, North Korea, China.
Rating: 15
Warnings: Graphic imagery, guns, bombs, you know the drill.
Summary: Uh, I need to be banned from the kink meme or monsters like this happen? Essentially, Scotland leaves the UK, which gives Northern Ireland an excuse to up and out as well, which leaves England and Wales all alone. Oh yeah, and this somehow leads to World War Three.
It was silly to still wear a sword to battle in the modern day. What use would it be against bullets and grenades? But maybe the world could forgive Japan for his need to cling to the familiar in such situations as this.
"I invented swords you know."
None the less, South Korea seemed intent to remind him of this.
"I invented guns too." he grinned, loading his own semi-automatic.
"Eighty years ago, I never would have believed this." Yong Soo smiled, slumped against the mud wall of the dug-out as Japan peered experimentally over the rim. The bombs and raids had turned what was once a small town into a muddy, dangerous battleground. Pieces of iron stuck up everywhere, walls still smoked and burned despite the rain from last night that had turned the ground into a swampy mess. "You helping me out like this, at least."
"It is beneficial to both of us that your sister is stopped." Japan murmured back. The morning covering of mist made it hard to see where the enemy were coming from. He was prepared on all sides just in case. "Besides which, Australia has been distraught since he couldn't find Katherine-san."
"It's only been three days, but with Chun Hei..." South Korea shifted slightly, wincing at the pain in his leg. Nothing physical, but his people were hurting and so was he. "I didn't invent war." he grumbled. "What time is it now?"
Japan checked his watch. "8:34am, Sunday, 21st April, 2021." he replied.
"I only asked for the time." Korea rolled his eyes, but still smiled. "Aw, I invented Easter and we're missing it."
"You don't celebrate it, Yong Soo."
"Don't need to, I just invented it to give to the world."
Japan sighed.
Something moved in the mist. In fact, a lot of things moved in the mist. Quite fast to boot. "Here they are." Kiku whispered, and Yong Soo twisted to look over the top of the bunker to watch. "Contact the other squads and tell them to prepare, Operation Paektu-san begins now."

The phone was ringing.
Actually, the landline was ringing, but since he was the only person at the headquarters right now, Canada paused in eating his lunch and answered. "Er, hello?"
He'd gotten used to the rush of static that occurred whenever someone was breaking through an information blockade to call. It also meant that this was a highly important call, since it wasn't an easy thing to do.
"Matt- you there--?" buzzed America's voice.
"I'm here, what's wrong?" Canada replied.
"There's something-- Alaska-- commie- -ard, I'll kill hi-!" The message was garbled but clear.
"NWO's invading Alaska?!"

Japan rolled, not caring for the mud that soaked into his hair and clothes as long as he could avoid those bullets. Clearly, North Korea had obtained more than just re-enforcements from China. Those guns had to be next generation, and fired nearly silently, with only the whizzing sound of bullets to alert Japan to the danger. Their own guns, in comparison, were loud and gave their position away when fired.
Using the mist, the North Korean forces mixed with the Chinese and took down every opposition.
He was tackled to the ground suddenly, and would have kicked the intruding person off had a sticker grenade not soared over where his head had been. South Korea, covered in so much mud there was barely any other colour than brown on him, panted for breath.
"You," he gave a short laugh, still out of breath. "you owe me. Even more than usual." He rolled off the smaller Nation, wiping muck off his face. "Our family is so messed up."
"In a word, yes." Japan sat up, noticing that Yong Soo had displayed quite a bit of sense by knocking both of them behind a half-collapsed wall, thus hiding them. "Though you do have to wonder how it became such."
"Wasn't that your fault?"
Japan widened his eyes at South Korea. South Korea indicated his mouth, which hadn't moved. Both of them slowly turned to look up at the top of the wall.
North Korea had propped herself up there, smiling vacantly down at them. "Hello, dear brothers." she picked at the remains of a burned out window frame. "How's this for a reunion party, hmm?" she held up something in her hand; a grenade, conspicuously missing a pin. "I even brought you a present!" She laughed, tossing the explosive down at the other two Nations as she fell backwards off the wall. Japan and South Korea scrambled backwards as fast as possible, but not quite fast enough.
The grenade went off, sending mud and shrapnel flying everywhere. South Korea bit back a yelp, since he was closest to it, sure that he must have got something stuck in him. The smell of burned flesh hit his nose, and he opened his eyes, surprised he'd closed them. He expected to find a foot gone or something similar.
What he didn't expect was to find Japan covering him, face creased in pain, with his back smoking in an extremely worrying way. Blood dripped down and stained the ground and the front of Yong Soo's uniform red and brown.
"Are we..." Kiku panted, his hair singed at the back. "... a little closer to even, now?"
Yong Soo dragged his sibling backwards with him, as far from North Korea as he could get, but unable to get up from the floor with Japan's dead weight. "Not even, so you have to stay alive to pay me back!"
"Now that's not very fair." Uninjured, North Korea simply strode over to the other Asian Nations with a slight pout. "How come, when he was so cruel to us in the past, when he tried to oppress us and kill our culture and make us just-" she slammed a boot into Japan's bleeding back, making him gasp in pain. "-like-" another, and Kiku collapsed forward on top of Yong Soo. "-him, you still forgive him and give him another chance, just like that?"
Kiku rolled sideways into the mud, hissing when the coolness hit his exposed skin. The two Koreas stared at each other, tensiom crackling in the air.
"I'd give you another chance too," Yong Soo finally said, hands fisting in the mud. "if I didn't think that the sister I once had was already gone!" The muck in his hand was lobbed straight at her face, and while she spluttered he grabbed Japan and started running.
Behind him, North Korea fumed silently, making to grab something at her belt before a hand stopped her. "... China-hyung!"
South Korea skidded to a stop to look behind him. China stared back, taking in his sibling's betrayed looks, before turning back to Chun Hei. "Not yet. They must be the first to use WMDs, aru."
North Korea looked put out. "But China-hyung..." she whined like a child. The older Nation shook his head.
"I said no, Chun Hei. Now go report back to base, aru, they want to know how the battle is going."
Irritable but obedient, North Korea marched off into the mist. The remaining three stared at each other. Something painful twisted China's lips up into a mockery of a smile.
"This will be over soon." he uttered, voice nearly snatched away by the sounds of gunfire and explosions surrounding them. "Just give up and let it happen, aru."
Japan raised his head as much as he could, determination flashing in dark eyes. "Never."
China seemed to weigh this response, finally shrugging and turning to follow where Chun Hei left. "It is, as they say, your funeral, aru."
Notes:
- In-story, it is officially 1 year since the trouble started, and Scotland left the union! I feel like this is some kind of mile-stone. However, it's been 6 months since the war started. Have fun figuring that out.
- The fighting in Korea is taking place on the boarder between North and South. Planes from both sides have already bombed the shit out of it while the world wasn't looking.
- Paektu-san - A mountain on the boarder between North Korea and China. The goal of where the WDF wish to push the battle lines back to, eradicating North Korea.
- Japanese occupation of Korea - Yeeeeaaah, Japan was very much the biggest arsehole in the world to Korea, pre-split. He did as much as possible to strip the Koreas of their national identities, burned their historical texts, crushed uprisings mercilessly and was extremely cruel to them. This is what reminds us that Empires are bad, kiddies.

What... does bother me here is how you portray the North-South conflict here. Okay, I do not claim to know much about this but... I just don't think they hate each other that badly? I mean, it seems to me more like they both WANT to be unified but just can't agree on things and end up in petty fights whenever they try and North isn't helping with her Russia'ish become-one-with-me attitude and South is being kinda paranoid and they just end up offending each other accidentally all the time and it just doesn't work out. Well... that's my view of it of course. My very non-expertly view. But... I mean, they even had a joined football team at one point and all.
And besides it was kinda the whole America and Russia just had to both have one half of the cookie thing that separated them to begin with... Kinda like East and West-Germany. Although well obviously there's much more mutual bitterness and all but I think Yong Soo saying his sister is dead is just... way too harsh?
... Anyway.
Yay for one year anniversary in-story! \o/ No wait, that's... maybe not so yay since in-story the events weren't exactly that great... But uhm... Yay for you keeping up with the progression of the story so exactly? \o/;;

In a totally different note: Whooh yeah, that was cool. \o/ I mean the whole SK first saving Japan and then Japan throwing himself on him to shield him in turn and NK being creepy aaaand all that.

Oookay so added Mongolia to neutral-but-inclined-towards-WDF according to that drabble from before. And fighting between the Koreas and... Yeah, Alaska. Hum. I just went with my idea there, just tell me please if I'm wrong! xD; I was thinking that okay, if I was Russia invading Alaska, I'd want to do it just as quick as possible, all Blitzkrieg-style. And I... don't think Alaska has that big defences? I think?, correct me if I'm wrong. =3=;; And not a lot of population. So I think if I was Russia I'd be confident enough to invade from three directions at the same time and... well, there are like... four cities there so you can just bomb them all at a time too.
So that's why I gave Russia a lot of area and lots of attack-sites there. There's just no point of attacking Alaska if you can't invade it fast, I think. But yeah, correct me if I'm wrong. I chose the invaded places according to where there were low-lands in the map, plus that bit that's actually the closest to Russia.

Maybe I shouldn't have used the word "hate". It's a little strong. More like South is extremely sad that his sister's ended up how she has, and that North is confused and angry that her brother won't see the light of communism and this has created so many misunderstandings that the two just have this rift of confusion and frustrated anger that neither will see it their way.
Also, I enjoy drama. This was suitably dramatic. I'm playing with future-history here. Maybe we can assume some more major conflicts have broken out between the two between 2010 and 2020? 10 years is a while.

Population is very tiny (the largest city only has like 100,000 people) so taking it down wouldn't take much once they got past the initial defences.

Hmm... makes sense that it'd need to be defended well since it's so close to Russia. Should have thought of that. >3<;; But I figured it'd also be really hard to defend unless you actually expected the attack. And yeah, backup is hard to get too. *nod* Hum. In any case I think the way I marked it would make even more sense like that, Russia would want to take down the defenses quickly and totally, so bombing several places right away would be the smartest thing to do, and to get your troops in before they had the chance to reorganize after the initial attacks.
... Now that I think about it, wonder if they keep nukes in Alaska? It'd seem like a pretty good place to launch missiles since they'd be right in Russia and even if they were targeted before they hit their goal, they'd still explode in Russian airspace.
Whoah. o.o That IS tiny. Especially since it's... not actually a small place or anything. I mean it's not the size of India or anything but I'm pretty sure it's bigger than say... France? ... *checks* whoah, hey it's the largest state in the US? :O Wow.

Yeah it's huge...most of that size comes from it's island chains though it's still big on it's own rights. Oh looks like I lied Anchorage has 300,000 not 100,000 but still...that's pretty tiny. ;-)
