Family Ties [Part 50]

Title: Family Ties

Characters (in this chapter): Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan.

Rating: 15

Warnings: Slight gore, but a lot calmer than last chapter.

Summary: Uh, I need to be banned from the kink meme or monsters like this happen? Essentially, Scotland leaves the UK, which gives Northern Ireland an excuse to up and out as well, which leaves England and Wales all alone. Oh yeah, and this somehow leads to World War Three.

By the time Iran arrived at the tent with Iraq, Saudi Arabia was already on the floor, blood from the spontaneous wound spreading from her shoulder and into the sand, staining her pretty silk hijab red. In between choked screams and Arabic curses it appears she was trying to bandage her own shoulder. The two girls dropped to their knees, Iran holding the older Nation's hand while Iraq took over bandaging.

They didn't say anything. They knew why this was happening anyway, communicating the idea again was unnecessary.

But this was certainly an unexpected amount of blood...

Jordan walked into the tent, and immediately backed out again when he saw Saudi Arabia's state of undress. "S-sorry, sorry!" he stammered. "Is the blood flow stopping?"

"No, I'm starting to wonder if the media were right, saying it was just a regular bomb..." Iraq was glad for her headscarf, keeping her hair out of her eyes. Already the white linen cloth was being stained scarlet.

Iran gave her friend a look. "You mean... we're being purposefully miss-informed?"

"Maybe, to keep everyone calm." Iraq abandoned wrapping the wound for a moment, holding her hand just slightly off the surface of Saudi Arabia's dark skin. The tips of her fingers burned slightly, and she withdrew her hand. "Like touching sand in the middle of the day..." she murmured. "May be a fire bomb, or..."

Skin bubbled and peeled off Saudi Arabia's shoulder. "Or radiation."

Iraq grit her teeth. "India. That whore."

Like it had summoned her wrath itself, the Arabic Nation drew in a sharp breath and bucked up, clenching Iran's hand hard enough to turn the fingers white. A new patch of blood blossomed at her side.

"Oh, Allah help us. Jordan! Get more bandages!"

"Australia-san," Japan muttered, wading waste-deep up the bank of the Xī Hú. "I do not feel completely comfortable with this." He, for one, had learned a very hard, very painful lesson about invading China and some part of the back of his mind that was still irrationally paranoid was telling him that doing it again would no doubt end up with another, potentially even more painful lesson.

"It's fine, Kiku. We're the good side this time." Australia replied, keeping his voice just as low as they left the water behind and crept into the trees, avoiding the city of Hangzhou itself. "And we're only here for recon, we get in, grab documents, get out." He checked that his gun hadn't gotten waterlogged, then a grin spread on his face. "And then we nuke the motherfuckers back to the Ming Dynasty."

Japan suppressed the urge to groan. Instead he continued his job; leading Australia and his men to China's house. It wasn't unusual for Nations to get nostalgic and go "retro" as they got older, but China really went the whole way. Just over the mountain, next to an old dirt path, was one of China's favourite houses. It had stood for easily two thousand years, being built and rebuilt again and again throughout the years despite it being only a small compound that could house few more than three people.

Three people, or one adult and several children.

To get through the front gates, they would have to cross the dirt path, which would mean leaving the cover of the trees and going into the open. Japan crouched into the foliage, Australia and his soldiers following suit. Dark eyes scanned the quiet property. It seemed like no-one was home, but it could be a trap. If they could get in without being seen.

"He's not home."

To his credit, Japan did not scream. Australia, however, did, though he would later insist it was a manly shout of surprise. Guns rattled off bullets into the air, hitting nothing but tree bark. This was because the owner of the voice had jumped up into the branches of the old forest tree, and was now staring down with a deadpan expression that only betrayed his annoyance to those used to reading it.

"Fuck's sake Dan, you scared the bejeezus out of us!" Brooke shouted, hand over his heart but a smile working it's way onto his face. Hong Kong shrugged.

"Sorry, I guess." his gaze slid over to the soldiers. "I'm an ally, put those down."

"Chill guys, chill." the brunette assured, grin much more fixed now that his heart rate had returned to normal. "Okay, this is Daniel Li Shui and he's... uh, actually, what are you doing here?"

"I live here." Hong Kong returned flatly. "But I'm also stopping you from being blown up."

"Ah." Japan said, glancing back toward the house. "So it is indeed booby-trapped. That is difficult."

Hong Kong nodded, expression ever unchanging. "Only I can get in and out without setting them off, and that's so I can get food for myself and Mei Mei, who's inside. Even if Kiku were to use his ninja abilities, they would go off." He caught the look Japan gave him and shrugged. "Yao-xiansheng is prepared. And he knows you well."

"Well shit." Australia folded his arms, kicking at the dirt. "How are we going to get what we need now?"

He had no sooner finished his sentence when a small external hard drive was thrown at him. He struggled to catch it, then gaped openly at it.

"That was simple." Japan said, plucking it out of Australia's hands and examining it. 16G, not much, but probably enough information to turn the tide in their favor. "Why give it to us?"

A thick eyebrow rose. "You think I had any choice over which side I took in this war?" The tone echoed with 'not that I ever get a choice in anything anyway', though his face betrayed nothing.

"Well, you could come with us now, mate." Australia offered. "Bring Mei with you and everything."

"We can't leave. Mei Mei especially." Hong Kong rolled up his long sleeve, showing the inside of his arm. A small black tattoo stood out against pale skin. "I'm being tracked. Both of us are. Russia insisted, ever since he started finding the information leeks. I don't think he ever expected you to come to me." Japan opened his mouth to object, but Hong Kong spoke over him. "Don't. I'm fine here, look. Not starving, or traumatised, or injured. There are plenty of other people you need to worry about, not me."

Dark eyes fixed Brooke sternly, then softened. "... about Katherine. It fades eventually. I remember." His gaze switched to Kiku, who quickly looked away, focusing on the floor, head bowed in shame. The southern Nation looked between the two, then sighed.

"Alright, if you're sure. But you might want to request a transfer back to your own islands. Mei too."

Hong Kong looked curious, if wary. "Why."

The grin returned, a lot less cheerful in nature. "Because I'm gonna be bringing the pain to China." This was backed up the enthusiastic cheers from the soldiers, albeit quiet ones. They were, after all, on a stealth mission.

Hong Kong's lips made a flat line of disapproval. "Fine. Thanks for the warning." And he vanished from the trees again, expertly leaping from branch to closely packed branch.

Australia turned and walked back through the trees, leading the rest of the recon squad home. "Think he'll tell?"

Japan shook his head. "No."

-----

Taiwan watched the exchange through the window of her room. Invisible shackles kept her from leaving to talk to them too, to see Japan, to laugh with Australia. When Hong Kong entered her room again, he found her pulling at her metal gag and collar, frustrated tears brimming in her eyes.

A prison island, that's what she had been reduced to. Nothing more than a place to sent POWs that could be of no use but as hostages.

Li Shui pulled her hands away from the silencing instrument, and held them as she cried.

Notes:
- Dammam and Al Khbar are two cities in Saudi Arabia. The first is primarily a trading port, and is highly valuable to Saudi Arabia's fishing and international trade. The second is full of residence who work for Saudi Aramco, the world's largest oil company. Rather than crippling Saudi Arabia's population, India as opted to crippling her trade. Which is nearly as bad.
- Xī Hú, aka West Lake is a very large lake in Zhejiang, one of China's oldest provinces. It's also pretty damn close to Japan, once you get over the China Sea. Lots of mountains too, like those stereotypical massive monster mountains you see in movies.
- "Xiansheng", meaning "master" or "sir" but written with the characters for "sensei", is what Hong Kong calls China in canon. Now I think on it it's kind of distancing...
- It is really not hard to put tracking devices in people, under their skin. It is, after all, frequently used on dogs and cats.
- Woah, 50 chapters. Uh. Yay me?

Too lazy to change the thumbnail *cough*

Okay uhm, you didn't reply to my follow-up questions in the last chapter so I just went with Austria, Hungary, Czech and Slovakia being completely invaded. Tell me if I'm wrong okay? -__-;;

Also, I changed the oldest red stars into greyish red. Figured it was about time to make some difference between the totally damn old battle or attack sites and the only just calmed ones.

I also made Taiwan an invaded area because the island isn't currently under China's control even if they claim it as their own.

The black stars on Saudi-Arabia aren't totally correct but I just wanted to make them a little bit apart to show that there are two and not just one Otherwise it would have looked like one, slightly plump star. And have I mentioned how much it depresses me to put those black ones on the map? =A=

Oh yeah and you said the former EU joined the war right? I marked them so at least although I wasn't sure about Romania and Bulgaria and how their loyalties would go. o.O

About the chapter though: HONG KONG YAY. 8D I was so glad to see him. And it's cool to see him helping Aussie and Japan. Poor Meimei though...

Poor Saudi-Arabia too. Desert = reaaally bad when it comes to radiation btw. It's going to spread all over. >__> Depending on the wind direction of course. If it blows toward the sea, it might not be that bad but then again in that case a lot of the radioactive dust is probably going to fall on Iran.

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
And yet another case of "Pidge thinks she's replied to something when she's really only done it in her head." orz

I didn't really have huge plans for Czech and Slovakia so we'll go with that. ^^ Changing the stars is probably a good idea, considering as time goes on it may start to overlap and such.

I don't think anyone minds if they're not precisely correct, you make a huge effort doing this in the first place. *hug* Yeah, Germany's got the whole of Europe in on this now.

I have a special place in my heart for Hong Kong and his constantly B| face. *squishes him*

I did in fact know about radiation and deserts. >3 It should be fun. I mean, uh, horrible.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. xD; That explains it... Oh damn, I just noticed I forgot to add stars over Hungary and co. orz;; There's always that one little thing you forget... Well I'll add them next time.

... That save was way too late, Pidge. *pokes* Your sadism is showing.

Btw, what's the story behind Hong Kong's name? I'm not asking about Taiwan, it's pretty solid fanon already after all.

I'm just going to nitpick a little though: Himaruya said that Hong Kong calls China xiansheng nowadays, right? (And Taiwan calls him laoshi.)

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not easy keeping up with this after all.

Oh darn, is it? *looks down*

Ahaha, I actually took it from an Hong Kong RP-er I know, though as a matter of fact it's quite common in Hong Kong to have a Chinese and an English name. Li Shui means "man of water", reference to him being an island, and Daniel... personal headcanon says that's because he was thrown into the den of the lion (England's national animal) and came out alive, like in the bible story. /lame

Now see, I knew he didn't call him gege, but I had no idea what "sensei" was in Chinese and I like to at least keep in the same language. *goes back to change*

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah yeah, I know about the English name thing! Was just curious about the Chinese part of it actually. xD I figured shui would be water but there's like a million words that are pronounced li. (... I dunno any that mean "man" though. I know I'm a dork but if you have the characters, i can has em?)

Ah, figures. xD; I thought that had been translated by someone.

先生 "xiansheng" : mister, sir (as you might notice, it's written like "sensei" but the meaning is a bit different)
老師 (or 老师 in simplified Chinese, but Taiwan uses traditional) "laoshi" : Master, teacher (so it's closer to the meaning of "sensei")

Both are translated as "sensei" in Hetalia but Himaruya made a note that they are actually xiansheng and laoshi in Chinese.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah and they are both added after the name if used with one: Yao-xiansheng, Yao-laoshi.

[identity profile] withgoldensoil.livejournal.com 2010-06-09 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Though actually my Hong Kong's surname is Li and it was Shui Wang that was his given name because I'm an idiot who always forgets what China's surname is and then couldn't be bothered to come up with another one.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
It was your Hong Kong? :D Oooh. Is it Li like Syaoran's surname then?

[identity profile] withgoldensoil.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I ASSUME AS SUCH because as far as I know I'm the only one who uses a name even vaguely like that for him. And yeah, though I've changed the romanisation to Lee, since that's the most common spelling here.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Right-o. Oh yeah, figures it is... Like Bruce Lee and everything. xD;

[identity profile] oozaru-angel.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yup! It's also just incredibly common.

[identity profile] tuulensisko.livejournal.com 2010-06-10 02:26 am (UTC)(link)

HONG KONG, YESSS. YOU GO KID, YOU GO. It makes me incredibly happy that he managed to stop Australia and Japan from getting blown up/caught, yes it does :D but ouch, Taiwan, OUCH. The poor girl guhh ;__;

Xian sheng does sound very distancing indeed. I suppose the sensei meaning in Japanese has some level of attachment/connection, but in chinese I've only ever used it with, say, a loose acquaintance. You're a terrible dad/brother thing, China B(

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hong Kong: *bows* B|

Yeah he's pretty good at that. He's got Chinese ninja skills too, like from kung fu movies.

Xiangsheng is an odd word, I guess. It's written the same way but it means something so different. Aaaaah Asia you're so confusing.

[identity profile] pyri-prongs.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Hi! Just some random lurker of the main comm who's just ploughed her way through 50 straight chapters here, phew!
Just had to drop a quick note to say how epic this story's become! It was already epic imho to begin with, featuring Wales my home nation as it does and brill British Isles bickering, but it's obviously a whole more serious level of epic 50 chapters on. Can't wait for the next 50 ;)

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Bravo, it must have been hard work!

Hello fellow British-isles person! *waves from South England* It is indeed an epic monster which has eaten my life story, and I love it dearly. Though I must say: next 50?! Girl there will be about 30 or less. orz I can't write that much. Nor do I think I can stretch it out much further.

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahaha oh that's brilliant, that's just fantastic.

Though, uh, Finland and Sweden aren't in the war anymore, they're neutral now. Japan and South Korea could replace those flags?

Oops.

[identity profile] emelethaine.livejournal.com 2010-06-12 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
I used the wrong map T_T

In it Japan and S Korea were still financial supporters.
And Sweden and Finland were still in OTL

(Thank you so much!)

[identity profile] alianorethecat.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
Oh radiation. Fun, fun.

Hong Kong! He's so cool! And aww Taiwan. Poor girl.

-nod nod- Those little microchips aren't only used in pets anymore. I've seen a commercial for one to put into your children and track them if they get lost/taken/whathaveyou. If that's already being done now, I can only imagine how much more advanced that technology is by the time this story is set.

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 04:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Fun for the whole family! Buy a uranium pacifier for your child today!

Not even ruffled, he's smoooooth. Taiwan always seems to get the short end of the stick in a war, huh?

Much, much more advanced, because historically it's shown that technology makes great leaps forward in times of war.

So ehhm this reviwe would be for the entire fic didn't wanna take breaks from reading it to reviwe every chapter, plus I'm not that big on reviweing I'm to insecure...ANYWAY

You're totally brilliant this fic, it's just AMAZING.
It breaks my heart too of course...
*crys* CANADA!
But it's incredible I read it for pretty much one and a hlaf day straight started wednesday night sat up way later then I should, read for pretty much the whole thursday except when I had to go and meet up whit a friend but pretty muc h thought of your fic half the time anyway. Called up two of my friends to rant about it one who love Hetalia and will totally read it and ehh one who depsises all things manga and anime, but hey she rants to me about all things soap so...(Not that I have anything against most soaps...)
Anyway back to the reviwe, I've spent days looking for good fic's to read, I haven't really been very active in this fandom (I multi-fandom like a insane person) so I had hard time tracking down the really great fics here but this is definatly one of them it is so going on my list of best fics I've ever read and while I've may not have read a lot of hetalia fic's I've read a whole lot of other fanfics...(I have no life)...

Anyway I love how you included pretty much every contry in the world, except you know most of africa but hey they have enough problems down there so...besides it's kinda hard to keep up whit whats going on whit everyone already, I'm a big fan of your brain for keeping track of it all!
So ehmm anyway did the nordic's join or not? I know we (I'm Swedish) fought Russia out of Finland but did we join in afterwards? I'm also 37,5% Finnish and I don't think Russia invading Finland would be anything we'd take very well...
Also what was up whit the waiting until we got wepons from Switzerland? Does our defence really suck that much? Cause my uncle is in the home guard and acording to him they seem to get accses to some pretty cool stuff during practice drills... then again they seem to do cooperation drills whit other contreys and such...So maybe I just missunderstood or maybe we don't have enough of the cool stuff...It's not like I'm well informed.
Awhile back we had a lot of military bases watching over the looming treath of the sovjet union but they took most of them down I saw one former one when I was a little kid and my dad or my grandpa told me about it...Whoa Am I getting of subject sorry!!! I'm really chatty and ehh I also have ADHD if that explains the lack of focus thingy so sorry...

Anyway you really manges to draw people in to make you think what if, what if it all goes to hell...
And you make me really worried that your fic will end well whit the end of the world!

And I love how you in the middle of all this horrifying-ness (I like to put words together) have those sweet and funny little moments.
Like when France wants to (or more like has too) invade Portugal going trough Spain and Spain has his little phone chain thing perpared. (also so awesome how Germany and Spain is basically allys because of the Italys).
Or how Portugal and America fights over who gets to help England more. And how absoulutly everyone always calls Wales in the middle of the night! (I love your Wales, he's such a awesome character).
I loved the prank war in the begginning and evn tought I'm horrified of how it escalted in to world war 3 it was really exciting too (In my defnece it's a fic it's not real cause if it where I'm sure I wouldn't have found it that exciting).

I can't wait until I get to see what happens next, I'm really concerd over what Alfred's gonna do as vengance for what happend to Mattie (and I love how you make all these family connections in to such a big part of the story and such a big part of everyones actions).

Tbc

[identity profile] thebackwardnile.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I've got this feeling when he keept saying an eye for an eye that he was going for Ukraine or Belarus, but I hope not cause Ukraine seems like a nice girl and one of my best friends cosplays Belarus so I don't like it when bad things happens to her, of course where ever it goes Al is pretty justified I guess cause what happened whit Mattie was horrible and still makes me wanna cry, and Mattie is his brother and you know if anyone ever hurts my brother it always gets me really pissed (I adore what Arthur thought about what happened to Scotland that no one gets to hurt his siblings but him cause it's so true to all siblings in real life to all over the world).
I'm also concerned over whatever is going on whit Liet and Poland (I cosplay Liet so whenever stuff happens to him in fics it gets to me I guess).
I love how you made Russia and also to a lesser extent China so deliciously evil.
I hate when people makes Russia mostly nice in fic's he's suppsed to be evil and insane and that's what we love about him. Even when he's being nice that un-nerving evilness is supposed to be there and you captured that really well whit the taking over contrys and speaking to people truogh North Ireland and Latvia and beeing creepy as hell even when not present!
And I am deeply convinced there's this little evil/insane side deep down in China, you don't get that old whitout breaking a bit.

And in war the worst of people comes out and I guess the same goes for contrys when the end comes I'm sure non of them aren't guilty of something they regret.

Whoa this got looooong sorry I hope you don't mind, and sorry for my crappy spelling at times spelling isn't my strong suite in english I'm a lot better at spelling swedish thought...
Anyway I just wan't to exspress how much I love this fic and how greatfull I am to you for writing it!
And honestly I could go on forever but Ehmm LJ does have a comment lenght limit and´already had to split it once I don't want to be annoying so here I'm hoping that I haven't been, and I'm really looking forward to the next chapter whenever it comes.

[identity profile] hellzabeth.livejournal.com 2010-06-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Wow, that is indeed a long comment, but then, this is a long fic as well. Bravo for reading it all so quickly!

I tried to include everyone, but it is nigh on impossible to do so. Back in the chapter where Ireland, North, Wales and England were going over the map in Ireland's house she mentioned they didn't want anything to do with their stupid war, so that's why they're out.

In terms of Sweden and Finland, they were in the war for long enough to push Russia off Finland's land, and then fortified the hell out of their defenses and closed off the Russian border. They're now back to being neutral (though obviously opposed to the NWO and Russia). Concerning weapons; nobody is fully equipped for war 100% of the time (except North Korea but... well.) especially if it's been peacetime there for a long while. Switzerland can only make weapons so fast as well. XD

Everyone needs a little oasis of humor in the midst of all this war. Some of my favourite bits have been writing the cute scenes where families are brought together by all this mess, like the Korea siblings, and funny moments like with Wales, England and Dora the underground-nurse.

What happens next concerning Alfred's revenge for Mattie is top-secret, hush hush. XD I'll be sorry to upset you anyway.

I don't think Russia's really 100% evil. He's an extremely messed up, mentally scarred, heavily traumatised psychopath, but he's not evil. Nor are any of the Nations, really. They all have good and bad people. They're more than characters, they're also countries, which not only makes them three-dimensional, but delicate to deal with.

China has his own secrets. What they are, you'll have to see.

Don't worry, my sister spells much worse. XD Thanks for reading all the way so far.

Well.. I believe it's distancing because Hong Kongers (like moi) believe there is a difference between themselves and the Chinese. Hong Kong is also more free and is different from mainland China.
