Mum: You can't just stay up and talk to people on the other side of the world all night, it's utter madness!
Me: Madness.... *turns around in her chair* THIS. IS. LJ!
Mum: ... what.
Me: Just go to bed mum.
Of course, there's the obligitory load of people from America that I've become rather close with (holla!), and while I have no idea if they consider me a friend in return, I've become quite chummy with people in Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Canada, France, Germany and Japan.
On the matter of whether I'll ever meet them, well, we're all so spread out and there's so many I'll probably never be able to, but if there was some kind of magical event wherein we did all meet, it'd be awesome.
Though fuck timezones man. They suck a big meaty one, geez. GMT means that I'm either keeping other people up (something I feel horrifically guilty about) or staying up late for everyone else (West Coast America time zones are my enemy. Though I love everyone on them.)
That's the issue though; if you've never met someone face to face, can you really say you're friends? I'd like to think so, but what are your opinions on the matter, guys?
Ah, I don't care, I love you all regardless. I count it as friendship even if it's one-sided.

Date: 2010-04-25 08:55 pm (UTC)Not really, that meant no friends and changing schools.

Worry not, your geography is just fine. There are tomatoes sculptures everywhere in the capital *which is where I live*But what if I forgot and suddenly it isn't just a day late but two?! D8
Uuh... This has nothing to do with anything above but do you happen to remember in which part of FT is the 'Geographical Correctness' situation? D:
no subject
Date: 2010-04-25 09:25 pm (UTC)Tomato sculptures. Oh Antonio, you did pass along your genetics after all!Then... then your computer died! Or something broke... or something. MAKE IT UP. 8D
You mean where America sat on Mexico and proclaimed it geographically correct and Canada suffocated America with Kumajiro and said "now we're correct"? That's part 17 Right here~!

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees, I can't get it out of my mind, when I first read it I was like "Oh! Look he spits fire..... OH WAIT! HE SPITS FIRE!" and five minutes later I was doodling. Same happened with England and his comment about St. George...

Date: 2010-04-25 07:50 pm (UTC)to being your friendly long-term lurker from next doorfollowing your journal, I thought I could drop by and offer my view on things. I hope you don't mind. :)First of all, the "This is Sparta" pun made me smile. Still chuckling as we, well, 'speak', actually.
I understand and see where people are coming from claiming friends met over the Internet are not real friends per se and that only those you have become acquainted with in real life count, therefore. But I always felt that was an excuse not holding much water. Over the course of ten years, I have met such wonderful people through the Internet I wouldn't have had the slightest chance to meet in RL. Nor would I have been as open, honest and straightforward with them then because I just can't entrust people with personal issues when I have to make eye contact. Uptight as hell in that regard.
Likewise, I don't think you really have to meet someone face to face before you may consider him/her a friend. Friends, to me, are people I feel connected to and the amount of friends in RL I feel connected to compared to the amount of 'online' friends is nigh on zero. And considering each day that passed brought us yet again a little step further into the globalizing networking world we have long since become, frowning upon people meeting and making friends online is becoming an increasingly outdated attitude.
Still, I see where all the scepticism is coming from. It's true, yes, you can never be certain the person you are talking with is really the person he/she makes you believe to be. But that's not a phenomenon limited exclusively to the Internet; people can be double-faced everywhere you go be it cyberspace or the world stretching out in front of your lawn.
tl;dr: I think friends are those you view as such and it doesn't matter whether you will ever meet them in person or not. I like to think friendship is immaterial and not tied to physical restrictions.

Date: 2010-04-25 08:34 pm (UTC)Holy shit that icon so true! There are never enough "this is Sparta" jokes. Ever.
I am so with you on the "can't entrust people with personal issues" once we're face to face, and especially not in public. Typing it out is so much easier, and removes the obstacle of looking like an utter fool when you get your words in a twist (I am sooooo much less eloquent IRL than how I type). Besides which, when you're on the internet you find people that share interests and it's great, because England's otaku population is rather pathetic actually.
My mum's always saying they don't count as real friends because I've never met them in real life. But so what? I think the internet is quite similar to meeting people IRL; you end up with having circles of friends, friends you only meet on certain sites, friends you talk to about one thing or another. Being two-faced does not only apply to the world of Anon.
Peeps need to catch up with the times; I have a friend that married someone she met over the interwebs. They've got their first child and they're so in love it makes my teeth rot when I'm in close proximity to them.

Date: 2010-04-26 05:03 pm (UTC)I bet Pluto must feel super depressed lately.Thank you!Ah, public makes makes it so much more awkward. I completely agree; typing is easier. Plus, as you type you are kind of bound to look at what you write and if you realise the tone's getting too sharp or whatever you still got the chance to cut it back a little. Ideally, anyway. But once something slipped out of your mouth there's no backspace to hit. It's out for good. And, yes, it's so easy to make a fool out of yourself especially when nervous or in a heated discussion etc. (You're not alone. I also fail at real speech.) Agreed! You don't... well, mostly anyway you don't have to fish for common ground first as it have been your shared interests that brought you together first. Another major advantage.
It's always easy to frown upon something you either have not experienced yourself or, if you did, have bad experiences with. Your comparison hits the mark, though. Even in RL there are various circles in which we socialise in various ways, so.
They did? So happy for them, it's cute. :)

Date: 2010-04-25 10:36 pm (UTC)Cool Writer's Block. :D Oh man, I have so many. SO MANY. I tend to be all nervous about calling people friends, though. It takes like a year at least to get me out of my shell properly. =3=;; Plus in your case I still kinda feel like I'm just a creepy stalker who won't leave you alone. *looms*

Date: 2010-04-26 03:42 am (UTC)FAILUREGeographical Correctness, The North AMERICAn way Fuck yes.I shall make a post for 'Family Ties' inspired things D8
Now I want to draw Scotland on England's shoulders with Wales supporting himself in England's shoulder and knee plus Northern Ireland hanging from a rope because there's no way Ireland is going to be his stepping stool, of course in a non-chibified/child-like way and less sketchy.......
Oh! Please, somebody stop me.
Re: Don't be too disappointed..(?)
Date: 2010-04-26 06:45 am (UTC)Awww they all look so adorable and squishy and and and I'M SORRY CANADA I'M GOING TO HAVE TO STEAL KUMAJIRO.
Oh god how much stuff have you drawn?! o.o;;

*is definitely not going to stop you*
EH
Date: 2010-04-26 11:55 pm (UTC)And I totally didn't meant for them to look that way but ugh. Don't worry you can have Kumajirō anytime, I'm sure Canada doesn't mind....
EH, as for properly drawn, not so much, I've been sketching lots of things thought.

Date: 2010-04-26 02:25 pm (UTC)Can I has this magical event in which we all meet up? Because that would be so awesome. ;3;
Ah...I'm a bit skeptical of the whole "considering online people" friends though. I mean, unless you get to know each other pretty well they're just another faceless internet guy. And how many of those people would actually miss you if you were to disappear for a time? But that being said, I've met some pretty awesome people on LJ who I would love to meet in real life, and I hope to do so one day, when I save up enough money to travel. \o/
You can totally be the England to my Portugal though. Husbando. <3no subject
Date: 2010-04-26 04:46 pm (UTC)I wish it would happen. D8 Maybe with the advent of teleporters.
Oh yeah, I do mean the ones you get to know properly, not just those you randomly chat to. I'd never have enough money to travel to all the people I've met, but it'd be so cool to.
Awww that's so sweet of you. My sister read that over my shoulder and was like "what" and I just shooed her off, but out of context it does seem kind of funny. ilu2 <3
Wait does that mean you have a brother I have to beat up?
no subject
Date: 2010-04-26 05:32 pm (UTC)I'm going to be tight, like Scotland, and put money aside for a rainy day until I have enough to visit the world lol. \o/
It totally makes sense okay. Even out of context people should remember their romance haha. ...And well, I have a sister. But she's not in need of beating up at the moment haha.no subject
Date: 2010-04-26 08:44 pm (UTC)Lol good luck with that honey. Ffff the idea of Scotty being a total hoarder is so amusing I can't even... and then he goes shopping with France and spends all his money on him. >>
Funny thing is that in England nobody does. At all. People are like "Portugal what". Call me when you need me bb. *shines her pipe in preparation*
