Title: Family Ties

Characters (in this chapter): Wales, two mysteries, Prussia, Russia, Ukraine, Quebec.

Rating: 15

Warnings: More gore, some fluff, confusing exposition

Summary: Uh, I need to be banned from the kink meme or monsters like this happen? Essentially, Scotland leaves the UK, which gives Northern Ireland an excuse to up and out as well, which leaves England and Wales all alone. Oh yeah, and this somehow leads to World War Three.

The room was quiet, peaceful even. Deep, even breathing indicated sleeping residents, the only source of light in the room being a night light plugged into the wall, casting childish yellow stars onto the walls. Nothing moved, aside from the occasional rustling of blankets and murmured sleep talk.

"...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAHHH!!"

The distant scream became much louder, and louder, and louder, until it filled the entire room and broke the peaceful quiet. From the ceiling fell a boy, hitting a mattress with such speed it would have injured less sturdy creatures. As it was, Wales bounced off the springy surface with an extra yelp on the end of his scream, before landing face first on the carpeted floor.

"... ow."

He was probably going to end up with a flat face by the end of the day, if this kept happening. Rubbing at his nose, he pushed himself up onto his knees, grumbling unsavory things that a boy of his stature probably shouldn't say.

"Who?" asked a voice. Blinking, Wales turned to look at the occupants of the mattress he'd just bounced off.

A little boy with curly blond hair peered nervously at him over the head of his teddy bear. Beside him, a little girl with a large ribbon in her hair was buried up to her nose in blankets and glared at the intruder who had so rudely awakened her from her nap.

"Um." Said Wales, suddenly nervous. "Hi. I'm Wales."

He received a blank look in response. After a sigh, he supposed not many people had really heard of him internationally.

"You fell from up there." said the girl, pointing upwards. For some reason she had a plastic butter knife clenched in her hand. "Where Gilbert goes. What did you do with him." Wales briefly wondered how much damage could be done with plastic cutlery and decided he really didn't want to find out.

"Nothing! I didn't do anything to him!" he raised his hands defensively. "He said he'd be coming just after he'd picked up the other one!"

"Getting crowded in here..." whispered the small boy, hands gripping the bear's fur.

The little girl turned to the boy and said, completely seriously. "Should I kill him to make room?"

The boy gave her a reproachful look. Now that Wales' eyes were adjusting to the dark, he was starting to make out more of their features, and there was something about the exasperation in that boy's face that Wales couldn't help but find very, very familiar...

"...yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaAAAAAA!!" the loud crow was all the warning the children got before a much bigger object fell out of the ceiling, bounced onto the bed and then landed on his feet with practiced skill. The two children on the bed, who had shifted over to allow for more room with little care for the fully grown man that had just fallen into the room, shifted back to their warm spots on the bed.

"Hey! You made it through!" cheered Prussia, shaking windswept white locks from his eyes with a wide grin. It faltered for a moment. "You did make it through right? You look awful blank." He waved a hand in front of Wales' eyes. "Hallooo~? What year is it? What's your name? How many fingers am I holding up?" Prussia waved three fingers around and Wales resisted the urge to snap his teeth at them. How immature.

"2022, Darren Kirkland, Principality of Wales, and you'll be holding up three less if you don't stop being a patronizing git."

Prussia withdrew his hand. "You touched a door didn't you."

"I did not!" Wales defended. He had the bite marks to prove it.

"Then what stole your sense of humor?"

"Gee, the nuclear bomb that just eradicated myself and my family?" the blonde's patience was worn to snapping point. "Could it maybe be that I'm having a little trouble coming to terms with my very near death experience?!"

Prussia frowned, and stood up to full height, which if Wales had been normal sized would have done little, but made an impression now he was no taller than 4'2''. "Okay, one, I just saved your ass and the asses of your fucking family. You're welcome. Two, there was nothing near about that death experience. And three," he flicked a switch on the wall, turning the overhead lamp on and making the children cringe from the sudden change. "Naptime over kiddies. Play whatever you want down here, if you sleep any longer you'll miss dinner and I work hard on that shit. But before that, I have an almighty being to wrangle with so if you'll excuse me."

The ex-Nation turned on his heel to go out the door, one which lead to a staircase. "Hey! Hold it!" Wales called after him, grabbing his trouser leg as he went to climb the stairs. "Stop with the cryptic bollocks for a second and tell me what's going on!"

Prussia seemed to be getting annoyed now. "Look, cryptic is kind of in my job description, and most of my info is on a need-to-know basis, and you don't really need to know." He put his hands on his hips. "But if you want your little brother back you're gonna have to let me go so I can go pull some strings and arrange reassignments and shit. Sometimes this automatic power transfer shit is a bitch."

Wales felt his heart stutter to a stop. "You... didn't find North?"

The albino scoffed. "Well yeah I found him, but he really wasn't in a state to be coming back here and it's not like I can carry him when his existence is so brittle he'd shatter like one of Austria's fancy tea cups."

Wales was getting stunned into silence far too often for his liking, these days.

"You mean... he can't come back?" God, no, how were they going to tell Ireland?

"I've been trying to tell you that he can, I just need to pull some strings!" He finally shook the smaller boy off his leg. "Now go play nice with the others and try not to let anything blow your mind too much. Don't get too freaked out by them; that's just what happens when you touch the fucking doors."

And so Prussia vanished upstairs, and Wales resigned himself to the basement for a little longer.

---

America had stormed out three hours ago, and it took the entire measure of that time for Russia to shuffle towards his broken sister. Blood stained the front of his coat, though it was black already, the other superpower having given him back his uniform for "symbolism's sake". It had a good many holes in it, bullet wounds on his body to match, but he didn't care much for them.

Occasionally he wondered if he was pushing America too far.

"Vanya..." croaked Ukraine, trembling fingers reaching for him, threading through his hair as though she was trying to comfort him. "Vanya... make him stop... Vanya... please make it all stop..."

"Syestra..." Russia sighed. His hands were tied, in a literal sense. He'd rather foolishly pushed America off the edge just to see what it was like to watch him go down. He didn't expect him to be able to fly.

A rattle of keys, and Ukraine gave a quiet sob, not enough air in her lungs to scream any more. Russia bared his teeth at the man who entered.

But it was not America.

Quebec crept through the door looking like he'd just snuck past a lion's den. He tried not to rattle the keys too much when he picked through them, kneeling next to Russia. The large Nation snarled and a heavy gust of wind issued forth, blowing Quebec's hair back with the cold. He shook it off.

"You're not the only arctic Nation here." he mumbled, seeming to finally find the right key on the endless chain. "And stop growling at me like some wounded grizzly bear, I'm trying to help." His face twisted like the word was bitter on his tongue. He avoided looking over at Ukraine, but when he did his face went nearly green and he quickly glanced away. "I'm not sorry for shooting you down. I'm not sorry you're in this situation. This has just gone way too far."

"Matvey, Matvey, I knew you'd come." Ukraine whispered deliriously, and Quebec's hands paused for a moment on her restraints, shaking before curling into fists.

"It'll be alright, eh?" His imitation of his brother's accent was shockingly good. Russia wanted to berate him for giving her false hope, but he hadn't seen Ukraine smile in nearly a year, watery and broken though it was. "Take deep breaths, everything's going to be fine..."

Notes:
- To all those slightly confused by a certain wording in chapter 84, go here!
- I will leave it up to your imaginations as to what actually happened to Ukraine. It's always more horrifying that way.
