I also have a Hong Kong coin (got a flower on it and everything!) But that is also in my purse in the back of Nena's car. >>

Yes I am going to keep subjecting you to my hideous face. Suffer.

Ahaha, so I'm not the only nerd who collects coins. My fave English desighns are the old Ha'pennies with a ship, the sixpences with the entwined rose, leek, shamrock and thistle, and the little silver threepences with oak leaves. Squee, so cute.
But I have so many old English coppers it's not even funny... especially as I intend to polish them ALL at some point. A whole friggin' box of them. And then I found ANOTHER box of coins in the loft, mere weeks after sorting out what I thought was my entire collection. So here's for another three hours of coin-counting...

I bet the reason for all the silvers in American money is that Alfred's so good at wriggling out of debt with a decent economy that he never had to use coppers. And yes, the accent was noticeable.

As for coins with holes in, I know the Chinese at least kept them on string - hence the lucky wealth charms.
Now I'm picturing England and Portugal wearing one of each other's coins around their necks... Aaahhh...

LOL, I got given a New Jersey coin in change once... Added to my collection. XD

I sort of collect coins. Mostly the old Irish pounds/punts/whatever, because after we converted to the Euro there was a shitload of them lying around in the house. Back in the day they all had animals on them- I think the pound had a deer on it. Apparently that was because when the currency was designed in the 20s they wanted to put saints on them, but then someone complained that they would be used for gambling so we got animals instead.XD

I also have an English shilling, some South African rand, 2 American dollars and some francs.:D

Hey, I've got a load of old Irish coins too - I always loved the animals, but I had no idea that gambling was the reason for them! I thought it was just the lingering Celtic animal-love, becuase it included symbolic animals. Cool, thanks!

Ahhaha that sounds like a 10p piece. That's where the whole "heads or tails" thing comes from, queen's head or lion's tail. XD So many coins!

We Americans do not use silver in our coins. Our pennies are zinc-plated copper and the rest are a mixture of nickel and copper. Also, the Maine quarter is not made in Maine.

Now, the presidents on our coins. We have old Abe Lincoln on our pennies, Thomas Jefferson (my personal favorite founding father) on the nickel, Franklin D. Roosevelt is on our dime, and the quarter is graced with the likeness of George Washington.

I used to have a 20 yen piece, but when I was working as a cashier, I'd see Canadian quarters and a few pesos quite a bit.

When I get a little extra coming in, I'll have to exchange some of our paper money with you. :)

I've seen American paper money, it's MASSIVE. Or rather, it's really long and thin compared to English money. I put an American dollar on top of an English £5 note, and the English one was shorter and wider while the American one was long and thin. There's a penis joke to be had there but I won't bother.

Thanks for the info on the coins! /will try to remember.

If it's indeed Swedish, it's pronounced... kinda like kroo-nuh. Something like that. With a long "oo" sound. It means crown and I think at least originally they had crowns in them. But I don't think they have holes in them. o.o; And believe me, I've been to Sweden so many times... (Also they have this which is the cutest thing ever. |D (And I realize I'm linking my own post, never mind.)) It might be an old coin, though? Maybe they used to have holes? Idk.

I used to collect coins too but then Euro came and... I kind of got bored with it too, I guess. x) I have no idea where all those coins are. Must be somewhere though. I had a ton of them and even old money from the USSR and East-Germany. 8D And old Finnish money... Baww, I still remember when we used to have our own money... The Finnish markka and the Finnish penni... Look at these: We had a wood grouse, and a seal, and a lion and a bear and... a lily-of-the-valley. And other nature stuff. Water lily pads and a dragonfly! The 10 markka coin looks kinda like the two euro coin, see? x)
