Well you see, what these pictures actually were was just doodles of some people he met, who happened to be from this country. The Japanese people, who can actually read the text next to it, understood his meaning immediately. Where as the English-speaking fandom jumped on the picture of a guy next to a flag and proclaimed it as being Portugal. Finally.

So yeah. We've basically been troll'd.
